The Government and Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emission

The Government of Canada has done alot to help reduce greenhouse gases. In fact in 2008, Environment Canada took action with a plan they had to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They found that industry produces approximately half of Canada's greenhouse gas and air pollution. The government set targets for industries that took place immediately. Companies were able to choose the most cost-effective way to meet their targets from a variety of options given to them. The Candian Government also made a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020. A tough federal regulation was made for industries in order to achieve this goal set out. The plan included establishing a market price for carbon, setting a target that will effectively require oil sands starting operations in 2012 to implement carbon capture and storage, and also effectively banning the construction of new dirty coal plants, also starting in 2012. The regulation will apply to all big industries and everyone will have to do their part.

I think this will work because the government has alot of power in changing the way things are run in a country and this is a great start to reducing our carbon footprint is by setting restrictions for use of carbon. Before you can retrace your steps you have to stop stepping forward first and I think that stopping the increase of greenhouse gas emissions before trying to reduce it all at once will be more successful. Also if industries are producing half of Canada's greenhouse gas emission, that's probably the biggest problem so being able to slow that down and turn it in the other direction is going to really reduce hopefully a great amount of these toxic gases.
